The element which distinguished the 316 grade from the others is; Molybdenum. The pipes made up of the grade in consideration contain a comparatively higher amount of molybdenum, which enhances the contribution of this element in the overall physical and chemical properties displayed by them. It is this increment that makes the SS 316 pipes one of the best grades, in terms of corrosion resistance. Other elements present in the alloy are, carbon, sulfur, phosphorus, chromium, nickel, silicon, etc., incorporated in the iron-based alloy in substantial amounts. While the carbon content in the alloy is adequate, it is further reduced in the 316L grade of stainless steel tubes.
Popularly known for their excellent corrosion resistance property, the SS 316 tubes are resistant against a huge list of potential corrosion causing agents, containing acids, gases, liquids. They are incredibly useful when operating in conditions having a higher concentration of chloride ions, either dispersed in the air or being present in the components inhabited within these pipes. The chloride ions are responsible for causing pitted corrosion in many metals and alloys, and owing to the resistance it displays skillfully against pitted corrosion, the SS 316L tubes are predominantly preferred in such environments. The heat resistance they manifest against rising temperatures is also commendable, with the tubes having the ability to tolerate working in temperatures far exceeding normal operating temperature conditions.
Being one of the most renowned grades of stainless steel, the 316L pipes are employed in several industries and applications, among them are medical applications, chemical industry, heat exchangers, dairy industry, food processing, mining, construction, saucepans, tubings, etc.
