SS 904L is a low-carbon form of Austenitic Stainless Steel that can be used to dilute sulfuric acid. 904L Plates are used in a variety of industries, including chemical processing and oil and gas production. The 904L Sheets are also used in the pulp and paper sector, the pharmaceutical business, and the metallurgical processing industry. The hardness of the SS 904L sheets is similarly good, however, it decreases as the temperature rises. 904L was designed to handle conditions containing dilute sulfuric acid, and it is one of the few stainless sheets of steel that gives complete resistance in such settings over the entire concentration range of 0 to 100 percent at temperatures up to 95°F (35°C). 904L is also resistant to a variety of other inorganic acids, including phosphoric acid and the majority of organic acids.
Alloy 904L was originally designed to withstand dilute sulfuric acid conditions. Standard shop fabrication procedures can easily weld and process Alloy 904L. It is uncommon to heat treat a weld after it has been completed. The heat conductivity of austenitic steels is only 30% that of non-alloyed steels. The weld metal has a lower ferrite concentration, the addiction to heat fractures can be limited. The product must pass a variety of tests, including third-party inspection, raw material testing, radiographic testing, and production testing.
