The SMO 254 tubes are high-end stainless steel pipes that are known to comprise a considerably higher percentage of alloy elements than the fundamental element of iron. It is this increase that makes it one of the most efficient and high-end grades of stainless steel. The austenitic grade is rich in additives like chromium and nickel, with the former occupying about 20% and the latter, 18% of the total composition. The counterbalanced rise in both chromium and nickel imparts the alloy with excellent corrosion resistance while also retaining their hardness and strength, which come in handy when dealing with mechanical strain. The incorporation of nitrogen is a defining factor in the chemistry of the SMO 254 tubes and one which grants them an additional advantage against intergranular corrosion, while considerably reducing its expense by acting as a substitute for the properties provided by nickel.

The corrosion resistance property of the SMO 254 pipes against salinity is so good that it is said that they were specially designed to be operated in seawater. Regardless, they exhibit impressive resistance against pitted corrosion formed by seawater and chloride ions, making them extremely useful when operating with liquids containing chloride ions or in a marine environment itself. Such liquids can easily corrode the metal and alloy materials but the stability and resistance inhabited by the SMO 254 grade are astounding and makes them perfect for usage in such corrosive environments. While the corrosion is tackled, the pressure exerted from the components within can still cause a problem. However, even this problem has no effect on the immense strength of the SMO 254 pipes, which are known to be twice as strong as normal steel of any grade.
