How does an RTJ flange work?

RTJ gaskets of different styles and profiles can seal RTJ flanges. The general RTJ gasket is the R style with an octagonal section, which places a solid seal (the oval area is an older type). However, a “flat groove” design accepts both RTJ gaskets with an octagonal or oval section. Typically, the gaskets are softer than the metal of the flanges they seal. The most common of these materials is soft iron. Pressure on the hardware of the flange ”crushes” the gasket within the ring’s joint surface. This helps to prevent any leakage during the working of the flange assembly.
